Abstract

The ovarian renin-angitensin system has received attension in recent years. But, the function of this system still remains speculative at the present time.
To elucidate the function of ovarian renin-angiotensin system, we estimated the activities of renin and angiotensin II in ovarian follicular fluid and compared with the concentrations of sex steroid hormones and their precursor in the same
follicular
fluid. Fifteen patients in IVF-ET program were selected excluding ovarian factor infertility. One of the largest follicle was punctured and aspirated in each patient during oocyte retrieval. The renin and angiotensin II activities were measured
with
radioimmunoassay. The concentration of pregnenolone, progesterone and androstenedione were measured with radioimmunoassay using their monoclonal antibodies.
The renin and angiotensin II activities did not show correlation either with the concentration of pregnenolone, progesterone and androstenedione or with the progesterone/pregnenolone ratio. But angiotensin II activity has linear correlation with
the
androstenedione/pregnenolone ratio (Rs=0609, p<0.05).
From this data, we can postulate that ovarian renin-angiotensin system may contribute to androgen synthesis in ovary during follicular period.
